Night Crawl by Phinnimonster Night Crawl by Phinnimonster
Happy early Halloween everyone lolol
But really, here's my part of my holiday art trade (I know, I'm late) with *Marlin-Rae. I drew her characters Mihael and Bree, who are werewolves! If you want to know more I recommend checking out her page, she's got a ton of awesome original characters that made it hard to choose ;_;

I wanted to draw them mid-transformation, and originally had them looking more wolf-ish but I couldn't make it work really so they're more snarly than anything. I started the sketch out on paper and then scanned it into photoshop to colour-- and then ended up converting back to black and white to get the values right before colouring again. Huzzah for illogical workflow!

Anyway, I hope you like it, Marlin ;^;

My first impression from this was a bit of awe and intrigue. I could tell there was something supernatural going on with these two characters in this piece due to their expressions, eyes, and the wolf subject balanced twixt them. I appreciate the usage of a darker grade of coloring because it gives the piece a sense of tension and apprehension -- as if I should be aware my back is exposed while I sit here studying this bit of artwork. As if at any moment, I could be mauled by something unexpected!

In some areas, the lines seem to mesh away in the work but where necessary they do show up quite drastically and sharp. This is especially true of their faces, which I appreciate because I do want to study their features and admire the handiwork put into carving them from the background by this artist's skills and technique. The texture proposed within this piece mimics pastels or charcoal to me, which is incredible and appealing in its own useful sense. This texture gives the background and subjects a mottled appearance like they're rising from the mist to confront and frighten me -- a highly exquisite choice, in my opinion.

My one issue in the technique chosen is that the artist didn't pursue having the moon be brighter to provoke the observer's eye to focus on the central subject, the wold, and then travel outwards to the two other subjects of the piece. The overall saturation of 'light' is low and on the rather dark side, but this can arguably be useful towards establishing the mood of fear and dread. This mood can still be supported if there were a few brighter areas of light in their eyes, on the moon, or perhaps even on the saliva or their teeth would have been worthwhile.

There was definitely effective use of negative and positive space. The piece does not feel unbalanced and everything seems rather cohesive. My only mention for areas of improvement is with the subject on the right and the central wolf. I believe the usage of shadows and light was quite lacking or ineffective on the neck of the subject on the right. I cannot tell if that is their chest, a shoulder, or another part of their body -- it's too flat and unrecognizable. As for the wolf in the center, its anatomy (especially in the legs) seems a tad bulkier than normal.

Overall, the artist's usage of colors, lines, texture, and character placement helped to express their vision and concept rather well. I find this piece very original in its subject quality, and one of my favorite features of the piece are their grisly expressions. It is in the opinion of this critique writer that this artist please pursue further works in this medium choice and approach to illustration because it is definitely fulfilling and enjoyable to discover, observe, and analyze.
